Controlling Your Emotions

“The key to happiness is to always have control over your emotions.”

We are emotional beings. We base our decisions off of feelings. Our experiences in life are determined by our attitude towards them. We can be emotionally fit, or we can be emotionally unfit - and just like physical fitness, it takes hard work and consistency.

Yesterday a coworker commented on how I was always excessively happy.

ALWAYS smiling. Actually quite a few people in the gym have commented on how I am always smiling. He asked if I was ever not happy. I am human too, I am not always 100% in the greatest mood of my life, however I am quick to snap out of a bad mood if I am in one. I try not to let my emotions control me. Realistically they are the only things we can actually control in life. We can only control our internal world, not our external.

I’m bringing this up because tonight I am feeling sad. (Side note pay attention to what you’re putting into your body because that can effect your mood. Eg. I had a few drinks tonight - I’m not drunk or even tipsy, but alcohol is a depressant. I am also aware that chocolate makes me sad.) Anyways! Besides that - I am feeling more emotional than usual because I am leaving Sydney soon. I really do love it here. It has the same feeling as Israel where it just feels like home. There’s a core connection.

Why I wanted to share all of this is because I think it is important to recognize the emotion (don’t ever ignore them or they’ll cause you greater harm in the future), but recognize it then decide how long you will choose to stay feeling that way. My point is, I only have less than a week. Instead of being sad that I am going, live every fricken minute to it’s fullest and love every second of it!!

Also, to clarify, just because I am sad to leave, doesn’t mean I am not happy to come home. I love my life in Vancouver, and have plenty of things to look forward too. It’s just weird to think that this short phase of my life is coming to an end. Plan exciting things for yourself, life goes by too fast and if you don’t plan anything you’ll realize 3, 5, or 10 years went by like that!

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today. And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun. - TIME - Pink Floyd

Back to controlling your emotions. People who deny the fact that you can control your emotions, well to be frank they frustrate me. I think it is ignorant and the lazy option. It is wayyyy easier to blame our environment. Obviously take everything I am saying with a grain of salt, these are just my thoughts and no doubt my perspective would be different if I were to have lost an immediate relative. So I recognize that certain things in life are greater than us. And that level of grief, I can’t even imagine and I pray to god I never have too. But I do still believe the ability to control our emotions can be developed just like our bicep. The more we train it (the more we decide to choose how we want to feel, the easier it will be able to control when in more difficult situations.)

I am not necessarily sad, but slowing down and just trying to take everything in. The nature here brings me so much peace. I strongly encourage you to go travel and live in another country. It’s totally different than sight seeing for a month or two. I won’t even try to explain it - but it is a beautiful experience on so many levels.

How To Control Your Emotions

  1. Recognize what emotion you’re truly feeling (Anger is usual because you actually feel hurt)

  2. Recognize what evoked that feeling.

  3. Remember that everything is temporary.

  4. I always tell myself that in the future I’ll be thankful for this experience so I may as well be thankful for it now.

  5. If you know everything always happens for a reason and it always works out for the best then you know that it’s actually a good thing!

  6. Decide that you’re going to do some squats and not waste another minute feeling unhappy!
